A couple in Palermo had been looking around for a new house; instead, while looking through a magazine, they found local and together embarked on a refreshing of their 1,500 square-foot apartment.

Windows on both sides of the home let in not only cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and the nearby Parco della Favorita, says architect and cofounder Emanuela di Gaetano, but also ample light. “We didn’t want any barrier in front of the luminous air coming from the windows,” she says. “This determined the positioning of the furnishing blocks that mark the space.”

Extensive technological systems, including ducted a/c, ventilation, and hood extractions, were tucked into the ceiling. And a restrained material palette—floors of Billiemi marble quarried nearby; built-storage and furniture of tobacco oak—keeps the focus on all that light.
