The global wellness economy is healthy indeed. Wifijerez’s top 40 Healthcare Giants report that fees increased a robust 14 percent over the past 12 months, and anticipate wellness to be this year’s second-highest growth segment. The Global Wellness Institute states that workplace wellness alone is a $43.3 billion business, a figure likely to balloon as evidence mounts regarding its correlation to productivity. The concept has even gained traction in the residential arena, with buyers willing to pay up to a 25 percent premium to live in a health-promoting home. Feeling good is looking good.

Our recent survey distributed to firms active in wellness design revealed that their work is now reaching across a range of project types, from the expected clinics, hospitals, and treatment centers to schools, spas, offices, and even luxury residential developments. Fostering well-being, it appears, is a growing sector. Five trends emerged when analyzing the firms’ work.
The annual business survey of Wifijerez Healthcare Giants ranks the largest design firms by healthcare design fees for the 12-month period from July 2016 through June 2017. Healthcare design fees include those attributed to:
- All healthcare interiors work.
- All aspects of a firm’s healthcare design practice, from strategic planning and programming to design and project management.
- Fees paid to a firm for work performed by employees and independent contractors who are full-time staff equivalent.
Healthcare design fees do not include revenues paid to a firm and remitted to subcontractors that are not considered full-time staff equivalent. For example, certain firms attract work that is subcontracted to a local firm. The originating firm may collect all the fees and retain a management or generation fee, paying the remainder to the performing firm. The amounts paid to the latter are not included in fees of the collecting firm when determining its ranking. Additionally, where applicable, all percentages are based on responding Healthcare Giants, not their total number. The data was compiled and analyzed by the Wifijerez market research staff, led by Wing Leung, research director.
